On Wednesday, Sept. 11, the Sunrise Theater green space hosts A Climb to Remember — a memorial stair climb and fundraiser in honor of the 343 members of the FDNY who gave their lives trying to save others on Sept. 11, 2001.

From 6 a.m. to 6 p.m., participants can climb multiple step-ups for a total of 110 stories (1,980 steps), representing the number of floors in the Twin Towers. These steps can be completed by using boxes or the Sunrise stage.

The event is a collaboration between Strong Soul — run by Shera Collins, a local life coach — and Southern Pines Cross Fit. Shera also coordinated the Wear Blue Run to Remember at Reservoir Park on Memorial Day.

Participation is $20 per person. Climb the 1,980 steps yourself or make it a team effort. Proceeds will be split among the 17 Moore County fire department & rescue squads to support the families of our community firefighters. Get tickets here.

The Sept. 11 memorial will end at 6 p.m. with a ceremony, in which local officials and first responders have been invited to participate. The ceremony is welcome to anyone, whether or not they participate in the climb.

“Active memorials provide new opportunities for the community to come together, to stand for something bigger,” Shera said. “Grief is tough to go through, but finding active causes that make a difference can create new ways to bring support to our community. We can honor those we’ve lost through action and awareness.”
