A Southern Pines’ neighborhood grocery store, IGA Fresh Foods on Broad Street, is closing next month. After years of negotiations, the grocery chain and the property owner were unable to strike a compromise. IGA has said they can’t afford the rent.

So, what’s the big deal? Some see it as a serious loss, pointing to the store closing as another sign of ongoing gentrification in Southern Moore that is pricing out longtime residents. For many in West Southern Pines, it was the only walkable option. For a local take in picture form, click here.

Property owner David Hooks thinks the space calls for more upscale options. “We are hoping to have another grocery store come in and take a look. Personally, I’d like to see a Trader Joe’s,” he said — which is probably something you’ve said, too.

Also, Brides Etc. is closing after decades in downtown Southern Pines, saying the bridal business is shifting online. They’ll be focusing on getting rid of inventory in the coming weeks, so get yourself a princess gown and use it to scare off that guy you can’t figure out how to get rid of.
