Owner Tiffany Fleeman inside the cycling room upstairs. Both the cycling and yoga rooms will be cloaked in soundproof black curtains.

Workhorse Fitness & Yoga studio opened its doors this week in the historic Southern Pines Water Works building, and the space actually kind of makes us want to break a sweat.

Workhorse will offer heated and cool yoga sessions. Peep the glass openings on the floors. We’ll get to that part soon.
You can’t see it, but the other wall of the strength and conditioning room is lined with every kind of weight you could possibly imagine.

The fitness studio offers cycling and yoga classes upstairs, and the downstairs strength and conditioning room is used for personal training and fitness-based boxing.

The childcare room will only be open when an employee is present to supervise, which Tiffany estimates will be from about 7:30 a.m. until mid-morning, and during 4:30 p.m. to 6:30 p.m. classes.

You can also find a child care facility and massage therapy room upstairs, upstairs. A physical therapist from Elite Physio Therapy and Performance will join starting in January.

Behold: the real-life Fixer Upper

The Southern Pines Water Works building opened as a water treatment plant in 1925. After closing in the 1980s, the building across from Reservoir Park sat empty for years until it was purchased by local developer Andy Bleggi in 2017.

Owner Tiffany Fleeman envisioned Workhorse Fitness & Yoga as soon as she saw the Southern Pines Water Works building, and shared her idea with Bleggi at a town meeting. Tiffany began her renovation journey at the beginning of this year — a journey that she calls “a real life episode of Fixer Upper.”

We were scared to step on these, but according to Tiffany, a truck could drive over these bad boys and they wouldn’t break.

She kept the exposed brick from the original water treatment plant, and restored the plant’s 1920s water filtration system, which is visible through a glass floor in the yoga and cycling rooms.

“It’s been a learning experience, but a good one,” Tiffany says. “This is what I feel like I had in mind, and seeing the tangible result is exciting.”

Though the studio is currently only open to those who purchased classes during the founding member period, it will open its doors to everyone on Nov. 25. Workhorse Fitness & Yoga offers monthly unlimited memberships, 10-class packages and single classes. Check out the website to learn more.
