Repurposing old things is something avid antiquers have a knack for. Janet Gardner and her husband are no different. The duo transformed the old boiler room in the Tyson Sinclair Building to an eclectic antique, collectibles and conversation pieces shop, giving the old basement room new life. It also includes a small line of vintage inspired clothing.

It’s named The Cottage Outback because you can only access it from the back of the building. “It’s an unusual place but we love it,” says Janet, “It’s amazing what you can do with a few chandeliers and columns thrown up.”

The couple has  been in the business for around 10 years, moved from Tennessee to Carthage a few years ago to be closer to family. “Our love for old structures runs very deep,” says Janet who now lives in one of Carthage’s historic homes. “We feel like we were brought here for a reason,” she says.

Roughly once a month, Janet plans to have experts come in to talk about the proper care of various antiques. You can think of it like a ladies night out with the goal of preserving past relics. Stay tuned for dates.

For now, you can shop Thursday through Saturday, 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. but hours are subject to change. A grand opening is planned for July 27 but Janet says you’re welcome to shop before then as long as you pardon their dust.
