The produce selection at the grocery store might be sparse, but local farms and produce stands are just gearing up for another season — while taking proper sanitary precautions. Here’s where you can skip the chaos and buy local.

:: Kalawi Farms and Ben’s Ice Cream: Kalawi Farms in Eagle Springs opens on Thursday. Grab ice cream from inside their air-conditioned counter, or check out the jump pillow and play area this weekend during their opening celebration. Online at https://www.kalawifarm.net/.

:: Karefree Produce: Karefree is hoping to open for strawberry season sometime in the second week of April. In the mean time, you can find other produce, ready-to-cook meals and ice cream in their general store.

:: Sandhills Farm to Table Cooperative: Registration for 2021 Sandhills Farm to Table boxes is open now. Sign up for a subscription box here.

:: Ithíka Acres Creamery: This Raeford farm is now open on Tuesdays from noon until 4 p.m. in addition to their regular hours of Saturdays from 10 a.m. until 2 p.m.

:: Moore County Farmers Markets: The Farmers Market at Armory Park in Southern Pines is open year-round on Thursdays starting at 9 a.m. until 1 p.m. The downtown Southern Pines farmers market will open on Saturday mornings after from 8 a.m. until noon. They’ll also be at First Health Fitness Center on Monday afternoons from 2-5 p.m.

:: Sandhills Farmers Market: The Sandhills Farmers Market is open Wednesdays from 3-6 p.m. and Saturdays from 10 a.m. until 1 a.m. on the Village Green at Tuft’s Memorial Park in Pinehurst.

:: Johnson Family Produce and General Store: Johnson Family Produce delivers to different areas on certain days of the week. To get on the list for delivery, text Amanda at 910-986-2650. 

:: Paradox Farms: Order your goat cheese online, or message them on Facebook.

:: Happy Goat Ranch: Happy Goat Ranch, at 1508 U.S. 15-501 in Carthage, has plenty of produce and baby farm animals for kids to play with. Call 910-315-2058.

:: C.V. Pilson Farm: is offering free delivery in a 5-mile radius for the choice produce. Ready-to-cook sweet potato fries are on the list of options.

:: Sanford Farmers Market: The market opens at 8 a.m. on April 25, at 115 Chatham Street in downtown Sanford. You’ll find goats milk soap from Barefoot Creek Farm, cheese from Paradox Farm, and produce from White Hill Farm.
