I Love You a Thistle and a Peck

Florist Mary Furby has grown Thistle and Moon rapidly in her year of business and now has a brick and mortar. If you’re looking for your next instagram selfie spot with aesthetically pleasing plants, this is it.

Mary is originally from Moore County but left for college, then lived in Wilmington for a while working for other florists. After moving back to the pines, Mary noticed most of the flower shops in the area were very traditional. Her style is more boho using dried flowers, lots of greenery and unique floral compositions.

She decided to take a leaf of faith and create her own business— Thistle and Moon. She began in her parents garage. In her first year she almost exclusively did weddings. For a while, she worked out of the Design Market but it was used more as a headquarters for her work, not as a retail booth.

Mary has wanted a retail shop of some kind since she was a little kid. After finding her love for flowers and plants she decided to combine it all. Her shop has a variety of goods all picked very intentionally,  she tells us. You can find houseplants, plant pots, decor, candles, and even cards. Our personal favorite is the Moon Bath Teas.

What’s important to Mary is that her items are sustainably made. “We have to take care of the earth,” she says.

In the back of her store is a cozy area to sit and chat, or ask Mary about which plant is the easiest to maintain…for a friend, of course. The space doubles as a consultation room for Mary to help you design your wedding/ event florals. Mary loves creating unique pieces for weddings and styled shoots.

Mary has previously taught floral arrangement workshops at Soiree on South as well as private parties but wants to eventually bring them into the store.

She thinks her new location being more detached from the “main strip” of Broad Street is beneficial with the big box trucks that come with flowers, “as long as people know we’re here,” she says.

“Plants make life seem happier,” says Mary.  So when we get questioned for bringing home more plants we will inevitably kill, we’re noting her as our enabler.

Celebrate Thistle and Moon’s grand opening from noon to 4 p.m. Saturday, Feb. 26, when you’ll also get the chance to shop a pop-up market from The Market Collective.

Find Thistle and Moon at Harbour Plaza, at 375 S.E. Broad St and follow the shop on Instagram.
