When it comes to golf, Knollwood pro Dale Briggs knows that the word “beginner” is hard to define. It could be the person who doesn’t know much difference between a golf club and a baseball bat; the spouse of a big-wig golfer who knows the lingo because they’re forced to hear it over dinner; or the person who plays on vacation, but doesn’t make time for it on the regular. For all of the above, here’s a few of Dale’s top tips:

Do: Rather than gathering a bag of clubs and heading out to muddle through 18 rounds on the course, begin on the practice range. At Knollwood Fairways, learn everything from how to hold the club to how to position your feet.

Don’t: Feel like you don’t need lessons. Even the best of the best get lessons, and let’s face it — you barely know what you’re doing. Knollwood has four PGA golf pros on staff who can show you the ropes. Best of all, they have great specials so you don’t have to drop a lot of cash on something you don’t even know you’ll like.

Do: Dress the part. You don’t have to buy official gear, but the relaxed dress code at Knollwood will make you feel like you fit in as you get in the groove on the course. A polo and khakis will never do you wrong.

Don’t: Go Alone. Golfing is more fun with friends, especially when you’re just starting out. The more fun you have on the green, the more encouraged you’ll feel to keep it up, so use it as an excuse to spend the day with a buddy, spend more quality time with your wife, or even learn something new with your kid.

Do: Find a way to become comfortable and find some success. When it’s a little slower on the range, you’ll have more freedom to miss a few balls without worrying everyone just saw you look dumb (trust us, they didn’t). Whether it’s taking a lesson, having fun with a friend, or finding the right club to improve your swing, it’s important to set yourself up for success so you don’t get frustrated and quit.

Don’t: Pay full price. Year-round, Knollwood Fairways & Midland Country Club offer military, ladies’ and senior discounts in addition to some great holiday specials going on through the end of the year.

Swayscriber perk: Make any purchase of $5 or more and be entered to win a $100 gift card. Five names will be drawn on Nov. 23, so you have time to get yours in the mix before then.
