More Cultured Than Yogurt

Hola, chào, and willkommen are not just words on your daily Duolingo lesson, but also ways to greet an exchange student coming to Moore County through NC Host families. The organization works with schools, students and families to coordinate exchange programs.

According to local coordinator Scott Rosene, NC Host Families has about 120 students enrolled and 30-50 waitlisted throughout the state each year. The organization works with students from all over the world, but the most common applicants come from Spain and Germany, with a few coming from Ecuador, Vietnam and Brazil. Scott’s job is finding families who volunteer to host these students, and he’s currently on the hunt for more.
“It excites me to think of how a host family will be enriched by the student,” said Scott, adding that the program forms a global connection in ways simply traveling can’t. Wanna know more? Culture yourself.
