Each year, Southern Pines Fire Captain Scott Padgett attends a firefighters’ convention in Indianapolis — and each year, more and more participate in a stair climb that honors the memory of those who lost their lives on Sept. 11.

As one of the lead instructors at SCC’s Fire Academy, Scott works hard to train firefighters to be as prepared as they can be, even though “no matter how much we train, there’s some things you’ll never really be ready for.”

“It’s a blue-collar job and there’s nothing easy about it. But it’s one of the best careers that you’ll ever find, for the family-oriented work environment and the willingness of all of us to step in and help wherever it’s needed. In this career, it’s about putting others before yourself, and that’s the way it’s always been.”
