New Chips and Margs Spot Unlocked

After three years of suspense, Santo Pecado, a Mexican restaurant next to Hickory Tavern, has finally opened its doors. Owner Juan Ayala also runs Don Julio in Asheboro and says it’s part of a family business that spans generations, with locations in North Carolina, South Carolina and even Michigan. His grandparents founded this legacy business in the 80s and now aunts, uncles and cousins keep it going. “We are very family oriented,” he says.

“We have roots in Jalisco and Michoacán,” says Juan. “We do authentic recipes from there with a modern twist and clean plating.” The menu includes classic hits and more elevated dishes like a whole tomahawk, stuffed seafood poblano and more. You can even add octopus to your shrimp cocktail. Juan’s personal favorite is the La Mamalona, which is a mini grill served with steak, chicken, shrimp, chorizo, Mexican corn on the cob, nopales, grilled jalapeño, rice and beans.

Juan hopes to add occasional salsa nights, live music and mariachi bands in the future. “We’re happy that we’re finally open, it’s been long awaited,” says Juan. Stop in 11 a.m. to 9 p.m. Sunday through Thursday or 11 a.m. to 10 p.m. Friday and Saturday. Feast your eyes on the menu.
