Ten years ago, Crystal Eads-Brown and her mother-turned-biz partner, April Nayman came across a “for rent” sign in a storefront window on W. Pennsylvania Ave. in Southern Pines. With no retail experience and a lot of faith, they signed the lease and opened the doors to Marie & Marcele within 30 days.
Then and there, they made a vow to one another: April would handle the finances and Crystal would be the buyer. Honoring that vow has led them to much success, though they admit sometimes they may tip-toe over that line if they strongly believe in something. That’s the magic of their partnership.
A lot has happened in the past decade, including three moves and, you know, a global pandemic. The shop’s most important change, though? Its evolving brand.
“We went from a regular boutique to a faith-based store that focuses on carrying brands that give back globally and locally, as well as partnering with local non-profits,” Crystal says. “We really try hard to pick brands that help someone else.”
Beyond the four walls of their brick-and-mortar space, Crystal and April have leaned into their website, community and their own transparency and vulnerability on social media during COVID. After years in business, they knew this pandemic could be a make or break point; but through the power of their faith and belief in the future, their growing community got them through.
The best part of the business, though? Carpe-ing the diem out of this life.
“We have experienced so much because of this place. We live each day like it is our last and have no regrets. We’ve experienced Paris, London, New York, Texas, Las Vegas, and Atlanta,” April says.
“We have been through so much as a family and a business. We truly take advantage of these opportunities and live each day like that with this business,” Crystal says.
