Monkee’s of the Pines is swinging its Southern Pines location over to a new storefront at 162 NW Broad St., the former home of Mockingbird on Broad. The current location is right down the street. “That store has been there over 20 years. It’s such a beautiful location and at this point it feels like such a landmark to the community,” says owner Veronica Lloyd, who is feeling bittersweet about the change. “I feel like I’m moving a piece of history.” But between knowing she would never get the opportunity again and receiving customer feedback about the crammed space, she decided to go for it.
“I’m hoping it enhances the customer experience,” says Veronica, “It’s a great little space and it’s absolutely charming, but for our purposes we just need to grow.” The move will take Monkee’s Southern Pines from 900 to 1,800 square feet, with a much more open floor plan.
Veronica took over the Southern Pines franchise in 2019 and opened the Pinehurst location in 2022. Monkee’s now has around 65 stores total across the southeast, with the Southern Pines location being one of the first 10 to open.
Veronica says it was important to her to get Mockingbird owner Sundi McLaughlin’s blessing. “It was really tough to see her leave Broad. I think half of my house is Mockingbird.”
Veronica is planning to move in the fall, after she redesigns the new space with a shoe wall, dressing rooms and more. She looks forward to expanding her inventory on products Monkee’s is already known for, like denim, cocktail attire and shoes. Expect to see the Southern Pines and Pinehurst locations have normal hours right up to the move-in date. To see updates to the new space as they happen, follow along on Instagram.
