Anything but a Short Leash
Sniff out this worldwide dog brand, currently based right in Pinehurst. Outback Hound specializes in get for adventure pups with a focus on leashes, harnesses and collars. Unlike most boutique brands, it’s geared toward larger dogs, with 1.5-inch thick collars. Founder Lauren Marriott began the company in 2018 when living in Guam. She has always been an avid hiker and struggled to find quality, lasting products on the islands for her own dogs.

She began making her own leashes and expanded to other products, and the company grew organically through Instagram and word of mouth. Her family moving a few times since didn’t hurt either. Now Outback Hound is in over 140 independent stores in the U.S. and online.
“I have a really awesome designer,” says Lauren; new patterns are released around every six months. A lot of research went to the harness design. Lauren says many harnesses are “H” shaped but hers is “Y” shaped. “It won’t impinge on the shoulder area, doesn’t limit movement or rub.” Outback Hound’s products are also made with materials that don’t hold onto fido’s funk as much as many out there.

Outback Hound has a few brand reps but many of the brand’s photos are actually Lauren’s and feature her two dogs. “A highlight is hearing from friends and family that they’ve seen my products in stores or in the wild,” says Lauren. Oh, and the name? Lauren emigrated from Australia about nine years ago, so it pays homage to her roots down under. Find Outback Hound gear locally at Urban Pet Co. or shop online.
