The Sunrise Theater, Brownson Church and the Village of Pinehurst all three made their film debuts as the setting for Pinecrest grad and Nashville recording artist Annelle Staal’s holiday single, “Mr. Christmas.”
Filmed in partnership with the Sunrise Theater and produced by Grammy Award Winner Andrew Bergthold, “Mr. Christmas” tells the story of a girl who, like Annelle, has dreams of performing on the big stage.
“Coming to a place I feel that knows me and where I have a relationship with the venues was so charming,” Annelle says. “We’ve watched each other grow.”
Annelle moved to Nashville from the pines after graduating from Pinecrest. She planned to move to Charlotte at the beginning of 2020 with a full calendar of 60 lives shows on her calendar. Like most of us, however, 2020 derailed her plans and moved her back home.
Unlike most of us during quarantine, Annelle hustled, drawing inspiration from her hometown. In between writing and recording, Annelle has performed live at The Wine Cellar, Drum & Quill, the Magnolia Inn and the Jefferson Inn.
“Being a military kid, I always moved around a lot, but the pines has been the place that felt like home the most,” she says.
The Sunrise stage captured her vintage spirit and the song’s bluesy sound.
“I hope the song is fun. And, of course, it’s not a true Christmas song if it doesn’t inspire sentimentality, too,” Annelle says.
