Remember Zerillo’s? The pizza place that opened in Whispering Pines, and was immediately overwhelmed with orders? Nine months later, the business has changed hands, with the former owners saying it was time to retire.

The restaurant closed briefly and reopened April 6 with the moniker Whispering Pies. New owners are business partners Tim Remzi, a military veteran (currently also employed as a department of army civilian working on Ft Bragg) and Patrick O’Donnell, owner of O’Donnell’s Pub and former owner of SoPies in downtown Southern Pines.

The partners aim to offer delivery at some point, and an enclosure for their windy patio. The hot pizza bar in the dining room has been replaced by booths. Pasta has been dropped from the menu, but “The Zerillo” pie remains — as does most of Zerillo’s staff.

“We’re not trying to reinvent the wheel,” O’Donnell says, “just trying to make a smooth transition. We put lots of love into our pizza and want to create a fun, family friendly environment.”

If you’re a MCS teacher, drop by on Monday from 4 p.m. to closing for 15% off. Those affiliated with the military get 20% off during dinner hours on Thursdays.
