U-Turns are In Your Future

Projects to update traffic patterns along a handful of major thoroughfares — U.S. 1, N.C. 5, N.C. 211 and U.S. 15-501 — have been scheduled for several years. We’ve seen the prep, but now things are gonna get real messy.

Along U.S. 1 and U.S. 15-501, work is planned to change road access by limiting left turns and creating fun new intersections to navigate. A center island will divide each roadway with a series of U-turn “bulbs” added for access across the road. The DOT plans to wrap up these projects by the end of 2028 — just ahead of the back-to-back U.S. Open and U.S. Women’s Open in 2029.

  • Why is this happening? That’s a fun dinner table debate. The short answer is that In the next 25 years, Moore County is expected to grow to more than 170,000 residents. That doesn’t account for the thousands driving in and out for work, shopping and more. All the traffic has made features like a center turn lane less safe. Stop telling your friends about us, we guess. Get more on the project from The Pilot or the NCDOT.
