Ain’t No Rest For the Wick-ed
Dawn Garred mixes medical infusions by day, and soy wax and scents by night. A registered nurse, she started researching clean-burning alternatives to paraffin when her candle-loving daughter was pregnant. Soon after, Village of Pinehurst Scents was born.

“You’ll do anything for your kids, even learn how to make candles,” laughs Dawn. “I just made them, and people really like them.”
Dawn’s process is trial and error — she made 40 iterations of her first scent, Magnolia, before deciding it was ready for a cotton wick. She’s created a line of eight scents, all for sale in local shops without the help of a website or social media.
Find Dawn’s candles at Pine Scone Cafe, Thistle & Moon, Pine Life, Charlotte’s Furnishings and Finds and other locations, or find her booth in front of Cameron & Co. during this Saturday’s Holly Arts & Crafts Festival in downtown Pinehurst.
