A New Conecept for Downtown SP

Here’s the scoop on the latest proposal for the former home of Doug’s Auto, on the corner of Connecticut Avenue and Broad Street. Owner Andy Bleggi’s latest design includes three buildings, one of which would be topped with a conical tower. When presenting the design to the Southern Pines Historic Commission, Andy pointed out that it resembles nearby church spires and residential construction with similar elements. But the commission was divided, and has asked to see new designs. Discussions are expected to conetinue in August.

OK, BUT WHAT COULD MOVE IN?

• The existing Doug’s Auto building would be absorbed into the structure with the tower. The tower would house a spiral staircase, leading to a patio. Andy says he’s in talks with an upscale restaurant.
• Plans for the long middle building include offices and a business serving baked goods and ice cream.
• The last building could house a wellness center concept on the ground floor and studio space above.
