Another Wedgie(s) Coming Soon

No matter how you slice it, Wedgies has the true meaning of a hidden gem. The gas station-adjacent sandwich shop with a cult following is now expanding with a second location in Sanford. The new location will be similar in size but in the historic district of the town. Customers can expect the same menu and charm of the OG spot, because to owner Chris Woody, there’s no need to reinvent the wedge.

Wedgies has been operating since 1999, serving up their unique pizza-crust style wedge sandwiches. The restaurant has used the same crust shipped from a bakery in New Jersey since opening 27 years ago. “There’s no one that really does anything like ours,” says Chris. There are some customers that Chris and his staff see every day at 11 a.m. on the dot.

Chris bought into the business in 2021. He and Joe Gay ran the business until Joe retired in 2024 and sold his share, making Chris the sole owner. “The foundation for what I have was built way before I got there. I just try to do my best to make us even better with a smile on my face,” says Chris. “It’s been challenging. Just like any business, employees are your biggest asset but also your biggest liability. You take care of your employees and they take care of you.”

Chris and his wife actually already live in Sanford. “People have been wanting this here for a long time,” he says. The shop will go into the former Kathy’s Java Express at 120 S. Moore St. There is no set timeline but Chris hopes to open within a few months. The original location will be open as usual, 11 a.m. to 4 p.m. Monday through Saturday and 11 a.m. to 3 p.m. Sunday.
