If you have seen a novel with a “free book” label hidden in plain sight, it might be thanks to an international organization called The Book Fairies. Founded in 2017, the organization is operating in 100 countries — and it turns out an official book fairy for North Carolina lives right here in Moore County.

“It’s a really cool way to share the love of reading,” says Mary Howard, who sometimes hides a used book, and other times hides a brand new book from publishers. “I take books with me everywhere I travel, so I’m always prepared,” she says.
