Bringing Bass to Vass

It’s of-fish-al, Vass is getting a seafood spot. After listening to community requests and thinking about what the area needed more of, Roast restaurant owner Matt Delle, decided to open his own seafood house. Named, “Coast,” Matt aims to make it a family style, casual environment. Coast will take over the building that was formerly Homegrown on US-1 Business in Vass.

Fare will include calabash items, low boils, baskets that are steamed, broiled, fried, or grilled and other signature items with a twist, similar to Roast, located at 370 Capital Dr, Whispering Pines but with an entirely different menu.

“Everything, I think, that is successful is a niche,” says Matt, who also already has a strong seafood background. He formerly worked with cooks like chef Roy Yamaguchi and Iron Chef Morimoto, both of whom had upscale kitchens that specialized in seafood fusions. “Even though most of my experience is in fine dining, I want it to be a good price point for families,” says Matt.

He plans to source most of the seafood from North Carolina where possible. Other plans include weekly live music and serving beer and wine.

Matt laughs about the name, saying it was a fun choice. He was amused by a Facebook comment that said he should open a third place, focusing on breakfast named “Toast.”

The interior will get a refresh (refish?) and the kitchen is getting updates as well. There is no hard opening date yet but you can expect to see a menu in the next couple of weeks. Matt is casting his net for a May opening.
