Here’s a Fashion Course
In golf, the more your prints and colors stand out, the more you fit in. Benji Boyter, Pinehurst Resort’s director of retail, gave us an inside look at what drives new looks.
The greens are filled with tailored fits now, but looser styles might eventually make their way to the pro shop. “I always look at jeans, what styles are in,” says Benji. Golf fashion is always a few years behind regular fashion, Benji says, “because it’s so men-driven.” Planning for the sport’s two retail seasons, spring and fall, begins about six months out. “Working in this industry, you have to be cautious of what you like versus what’s on trend,” he says.
If you’re a fan of turning heads, don’t worry — Benji says there’s plenty of room to get silly. “There’s definitely a whimsical aspect to golf fashion. A funny hat will be noticed.”
Interest in golf has grown along with the popularity of athleisure. More clothes are being made for performance that can be worn every day. Benji says that as more women pick up golf, traditional brands are shifting gears. “It’s interesting because most women want that sporty look. Men want the least amount of outfit changes,” Benji laughs.
Pinehurst Resort has half a dozen vendors that they partner with on truly custom wear. Each year, designers visit and interact with staff (not just the marketing department) to collaborate on designs.
The top picks are put to a vote and then the tag is dedicated to the Pinehurst employee who collaborated on it. Shirts, dresses and more use fabrics designed exclusively for Pinehurst. There are even custom shoes. Take a look at what you can rock on the course from Pinehurst here.
