If You Know, You Know
The secret is out: Seaboard Freight, a jazz speakeasy located in Southern Pines’ old freight depot, is currently in its soft opening phases. Staying true to the speakeasy formula, owner Kevin Drum was specific with his designs from the closed doors to the inconspicuous signage. He wanted the place to feel like stepping back in time.
Each door has a sign that reads “Closed for violation of National Prohibition Act.” Although there won’t be a password situation, Kevin says seeing the word “closed” in bold is already throwing people off. “You gotta be kinda brave to open the door,” he says. “If you know, you know.”
The walls are decorated with old photos from Southern Pines and vintage Seaboard Railway postcards. Kevin says one of the most challenging parts of the design was keeping it simplistic. “Everyone had all these ideas of making it look beautiful and grand. I wanted it to look like a freight building because that’s what it is. I felt like the building deserved respect.”
According to Kevin’s research, the first train depot in Southern Pines was a wooden structure built in 1896. The current depot that replaced it was constructed in 1930. As a nod to the original structure, Kevin designed the bar to look like it was from 1896. It took six months to construct and a custom wood stain was created to be made to achieve the right look.
The bar menu, he says, will be different from Drum & Quill. It will stay ever-evolving and feature a wide selection of wine, beers from around the world, Prohibition-era cocktails with a twist and even traditional absinthe rituals. He’s still finalizing details but Seaboard Freight will also have a membership loyalty program. Those who opt in may get a secret message about a live band playing that night or earn rewards like merch over time.
Hours are subject to change but unless someone calls the coppers, the speakeasy will be open Wednesday and Thursday 4 p.m. to midnight, Friday and Saturday 4 p.m. to 1 a.m. and Sunday 4-10 p.m. If you can keep a secret, follow along here.
