Old Town Mercantile opened its doors today (Thursday, Aug. 13) in downtown Aberdeen, offering a Scottish-inspired shopping experience with a mix of market provisions and essentials for travel and adventure. Owners Lindy and Ryan Lamielle have renovated several buildings in historic downtown Aberdeen, and Lindy has long dreamed of creating a retail space of her own. Updating this particular building was one of their most ambitious projects yet, and during the renovations, Lindy saw an opportunity to bring her dream to life. She was especially inspired during a family trip to Scotland in 2024. “The colors, the architecture, the shops, the dining – it all felt like home to me,” she says.
A lot fell in sync while imagining the concept. During their trip, they visited Aberdeen, Scotland, which further cemented Lindy’s ideas given that our Aberdeen was settled by Scottish Highlanders. “What better way to pay homage to the town’s history?” She also learned the building’s initial use back in the early 1900s was a mercantile store, adding another layer of meaning.
Inside you’ll find stoneware, tweed bags, provisions, a kid’s section, adventure supplies, novelty Scottish brands as well as North Carolina made products. The shop is still in its soft opening phases with a grand opening planned for October. For now, you can shop Thursday through Sunday, noon to 4 p.m. Expect to see extended hours soon.
