Plate Drives Attention

Pinehurst resident John Spangler has been driving around with his custom “USOPEN24” license plate for about a decade. Why? He and his wife, Kathy, are avid golfers and know how to commit to a bit. “The best part about golf is the camaraderie of the sport,” says John, who is a member of the philanthropic golf group the Tin Whistles. After receiving positive feedback from other locals and golf fans who wish they’d thought of it, John has already called dibs — he’s ordered a “USOPEN29” plate that’ll replace his current one at the end of this year’s championship.
