The Hive is Buzzing

The Jive Hive is buzzing once again. Owners Jon and Franie Rachels have been creating this grassroots eclectic oasis in Carthage for over 15 years. What started as a way to get music equipment out of the house turned into Jon (and fellow music lovers) slowly converting their six stall horse barn into a jam hall and lounge space. By 2012 they hosted their first musical festival, almost like a mini Shakori Hills Grassroots Festival. The venue has transformed over the years to include an outdoor stage, attracting performance enthusiasts of all kinds or what Jon dubs “like-minded individuals.”

Like many, The Jive Hive took a hiatus when Covid struck, which turned into a years-long break from large shows. Afterall, the venue is right on the Rachels’ property. But Jon and Franie have been ramping back up this year after achieving official nonprofit status, with plans to host more events and jam sessions. “We try to bring them something they’ve never seen before,” says Jon. In addition to bands, fire jugglers, burlesque shows, circus acts, toga parties and more have performed. Virtually nothing is off the table. The couple’s number one rule is: peace and love required.

Future plans include additional renovations as well as themed nights like jazz or beach shag. There’s also potential for a podcast. Those who visit the venue will be quickly greeted by the Rachels’ many music-loving animals. The Jive Hive’s motto is, “come as strangers, leave as a tribe.”

  • Saturday, Aug. 22, 5:30 p.m.: See the band “Airshow” with special guest Retrograde take the outdoor stage. Enjoy food trucks, a kids area and even an aerobatic flyover to “buzz the hive.” Airshow at an airshow, if you will.
  • Due to unforeseen circumstances this event will now be BYOB.
