This building behind the Jefferson Inn in Southern Pines once housed the inn’s laundry service, but has been mostly abandoned for more than 50 years. It currently features boarded-up windows and a basement we’re sure is filled with obscene graffiti.
Virginia Gallagher, owner and founder of Hot Asana/Cool Asana, purchased the building in August. She has big plans for its future.
Virginia envisions the building as the new three-story headquarters of her company, which includes studios in Southern Pines and West End, Durham, Danville, Hampstead and Colorado Springs. It will feature a yoga studio in the basement, a juice bar and retail shop on the main floor, and offices upstairs.
“To me this is one of the last pieces in downtown that has not been addressed,” she said. “I look at this project as a way to give back to Southern Pines and to the people here who have given so much to me, my family and my business. It will be a gift.”
Proposed work includes a new roof, adding stucco and shifting the entrance to face the parking lot. Even after the building is completed, Hot Asana will continue to operate in its space above the Sunrise Theater.
“We don’t know how long it will take to get this building ready,” Virginia said. “It is a huge project. We are not rushing it.”
