Development Begins on Target and Morganton Park South Shopping Center

The Morganton Park South shopping center had its groundbreaking on Thursday, Dec. 1. For those who still don’t, ahem, read our newsletter: Yes, we’re getting a Target. For those who “will believe when they see it,” prepare to, well, see it.

“I can finally say yes to the constant question that we’ve heard for 16 years: ‘Do you have a target?’ Yes! We are going to have a Target,” Mayor Carol Haney said at the event.

“You don’t see a community of 100,000 people that has the quality of folks you have in this community,” said John Silverman, managing principal and co-founder of Midland Atlantic Properties. His company is developing the site.

Here’s what we know:

  1. It will be 149,000 square feet. That’s about twice the size of the Mega Teeter in Taylortown.
  2. There’s (yes, another) Starbucks. It’ll share frontage with Target, and have a grassy courtyard.
  3. We know what’s coming now and later. The Dick’s Sporting Goods and Golf Galaxy stores we previously announced will also open in 2024. The HomeGoods and FiveBelow will follow.
  4. History will be preserved. There are also plans to incorporate the nearby historic cemetery, which dates back to 1787. Working with the Moore County Historical Association, the developers have plans to keep the headstones safe during construction. Upon completion, a path will lead to the area, which will feature a picket fence, some park benches and other landscaping.

Some renderings of Target have been released. John said his team took notes from DTSP, and it will include water features such as a fountain, sidewalks and “lots of wood and brick.”
