Market Off the List

Aberdeen native Liz Garner couldn’t fathom the fact that the town still didn’t have a regular farmers market of its own, so she took matters into her own hands. She’s not a farmer, just a lover of farmers markets, and a cheerleader for local producers. She even joined the downtown Aberdeen advisory board to figure out what steps she needed to take to make it happen. Then the Aberdeen Public Library offered its new green space and the idea took off.

The farmers market will be held on Fourth Fridays, but since we’re approaching the colder months, there will only be two more this year before resuming in the spring.

Liz believes having the market in conjunction with Fourth Fridays will add more walkability to the town. “There’s a lot going on during Fourth Fridays, but I also didn’t want to be in competition with all the other wonderful farmers markets in the area,” says Liz. Liz’s goal is for the markets to be more producer-focused than craft-focused.

Although she’s not a farmer, Liz does have experience with pop-up markets. Her and her daughter own The Aberdeen Book Nook, a pop-up book store that Liz hopes will one day grow into a permanent spot.

“I just feel like every thriving community needs a farmers market,” she says.

Stroll the next Aberdeen Farmers Market on Friday, Oct. 23, 4-7 p.m. Keep an eye out for info on a Nov. 27 market as well.
