If you’re looking for a way to change up your space without breaking out a hammer or spending hours agonizing over paint samples, we have a plush solution: pillows from Eloise Trading Co. Your sofa, chair or bed is a great place to incorporate textures, colors, patterns and shapes. Like your last love interest, pillows don’t offer or require any commitment. Unlike your last love interest, pillows are always there to support you. Too dark? Sorry. Let’s just get into it.

How Do I Choose Pillows?

  1. Look for three. Like comedy (so we’re told), pillow groupings work best when you adhere to the rule of three. You need at least three pillows, each a little bit different, but all in the same theme. If you’re feeling brave, you might grow your collection to five. If you can confidently pick out six complementary pillows, you’re far too advanced for this guide. Go away.
  2. Pick a color family. One that actually likes each other. The easiest way to start is by color and saturation. They don’t have to be exactly the same hue, but they should be colors that would naturally appear together — like those that are all bright, or all muted. Maybe they are monochrome. Pastels. Neutrals. You get it.
  3. Choose your “base.” You need a matriarch to tie the group together and set the tone; one pillow that picks up elements of the others you select. Is your vibe “sassy Southern grandma” or “widow fisherman with a leather-bound library?” We think we’re saying pillows are the the family you get to choose.
  4. Pick a normie. You want at least one pillow that doesn’t rock the boat. She doesn’t turn heads, but upon closer inspection, an interesting texture may be revealed. She’s sturdy. Always there for you. She might even end up being your favorite.
  5. Pick a wild. Here’s where you can go crazy (within the previously set rules). Look for something a little unexpected to add to your family. This is where the wine aunt comes to visit. She’s well-traveled. She’s mysterious. She’s wearing silk, velvet, or maybe even some polka dots.

I’m a Visual Learner. Can I See This in Action at Eloise Trading Co.?

Sure! Here’s a look at how Eloise Trading Co. in downtown Aberdeen puts the theories into practice:

If you’re been paying attention in class, you should see the theory emerge in Eloise Trading Co.’s curated pillow bundles above. You have a base (the neutral with a stripe), the normie (checkered) and the wild (dandelions). In the five-pillow example, you have three normies and one wild. While they’re not all match-matchy, they all have the same tones.

Notice, in the blue example, they are not all the same hue, but they’re in the same color family. They defo get along, even though the wine aunt is particularly showy with polka dots in varying colors and a fun texture. The red mix has two wine aunts, which can be afforded when you have three other family members to balance them out. Can the “fun” pillow also act as a base? This mix shows us that’s possible!

I’m Still Not Getting It.
