Sal’s of Southern Pines Re-Thinks Meal Prepping

It’s time to think outside of the Lean Cuisine — because there are only so many ways to dress up Santa Fe rice and beans before you end up drowning your sorrows in week-old Cheez-Its. Cue Sal’s of Southern Pines — a new meal prep service that specializes in food that owner Sarah Gunderson calls “deliciously healthy.”

You can find far from basic entrees like harissa braised chicken, and lunch options like tuna poke bowls and salads on the menu.

Cakes made by Sarah are available as add-ons, and everything from Sal’s is dairy-free. Oh, and menu items vary from week to week.

As a former body builder and graduate of Le Cordon Bleu College of Culinary Arts in Minneapolis, Sal’s ties Sarah’s passions of total wellness and healthy eating together.

“I know that eating healthy with a busy schedule is hard,” Sarah says. “I wanted to create dishes that are a bit more composed than just chicken and broccoli.”

Each entrée dish feeds two people. You can also order half entrées that feed one. Everything comes in a microwave safe container and can be heated and ready in minutes.

Ordering goes live at noon on Saturdays and stays up until Monday morning. Pick up is on Tuesdays, Wednesdays and Thursdays at Hatchet from 4-8 p.m.

Sal’s is operating out of a commissary kitchen right now, but Sarah hopes to get into her own brick-and-mortar. For now, she’s sticking to re-defining meal prep.

“I just want to show people that healthy food doesn’t have to be flavorless and boring,” Sarah says.
