Sonia Middleton began sharing her love for cooking by holding classes in her kitchen during the summer for her children and their friends. Those summer memories have since flourished into Sonia’s Bilingual Kitchen — a business born from Sonia’s passion for teaching the importance of eating right and crafting delicious meals.

“In my hometown in Colombia, South America, my grandma was the queen of the kitchen. I learned from her. This business has kept the fun and memories coming,” Sonia said. “It has changed my life.”

Instructed by Sonia herself in English and Spanish, Sonia’s Bilingual Kitchen offers cooking classes for kids and adults. The kids classes cover everything from slicing techniques and kitchen safety, to how to select healthy foods.

Her motto, “cooking with a message,” stems from her personal belief — love people more than things. Each of Sonia’s classes are taught with that message in mind. During her classes for both kids and adults, Sonia conveys the important role that good food plays in enhancing relationships and cultivating a healthy lifestyle.

“The dishes we make are always fresh and always balanced,” Sonia said. “Another objective of me showing them this cooking style is exposing kids to new ingredients, to new combinations and to new fruits and vegetables.”

Kids Classes at Sonia’s Bilingual Kitchen

Due to COVID, in-person group cooking classes are on hold, but she’s hosting group classes for kids via Zoom all summer long. Zoom classes are every day from 10 a.m. until 12 p.m.

Each week of virtual kids group classes has a menu theme. Upcoming theme weeks include “Better Than NC’s Best,” “L.A. Street Tacos” and “Empanadas with Everything.” Keep up with Sonia’s Bilingual Kitchen on Facebook to see upcoming dates for summer cooking classes.

The menu for the week of July 1 included a bison burger made with meat from a local farm, seasoned with Rosemary olive oil paste and avocado cheese spread.

You can also sign up for private lessons. Sonia will come to your home, or she welcomes one-on-one classes in her own kitchen. Private classes for kids are available on Tuesdays from 3-5 p.m. or from 4-6 p.m. The menu for private classes can be selected by the participant from Sonia’s repertoire, but she also accepts suggestions.

Adult Classes at Sonia’s Bilingual Kitchen

Sonia hosts group cooking classes for adults via Zoom, too. Private classes for adults are upon request. Topics for adult classes range from table dressing and kitchen hacks, to meal prepping. The menu for adult classes is up to the participant, and the fee is dependent on the menu.
