Southern Pines town leaders have approved Pinnacle Design/Build Group’s plans for the new 9,000-square-foot home of Southern Pines CrossFit, next to Nature’s Own and 195 American Fusion, near Old U.S. 1 in Southern Pines.
Co-owners Sarah Ellman and Toni Anne Washington bought the property in fall 2019 with the intent to expand the space they’ve outgrown at 105 E Connecticut Ave. But Sarah, a nurse, and Toni Anne, a physician, have since broadened the idea to one that embraces the concept of functional medicine, or treating the whole person.
The building will be split into sections with separate entrances for:
- an indoor-outdoor childcare center open to the community and led by a certified teacher and fitness instructor, with a focus on nutrition and nature,
- rooms for massage and physical/mental therapy, and
- a 7,000-square-foot CrossFit gym with locker rooms and showers.
“We’ve really expanded the concept from a gym to a community center for all ages,” Sarah says. “I can’t tell you how excited we are.” Work is expected to begin this summer.
