And listening for new developments as local officials discuss the possibility of extending a commuter rail from Southern Pines to Raleigh.
The dedicated passenger train route would cater to the 9-5 crowd and use the CSX-owned “S” line that stretches from Virginia through North Carolina down to Tampa, Florida, passing through Cameron, Vass, Southern Pines and Aberdeen. There’s a lot of moving parts to this, pun intended, and where parking would be located is one of them.
It’s not the first time the idea has been proposed, but Southern Moore County’s population recently hit the DOT’s threshold to form a metropolitan planning organization — which means we could get funding to actually make it happen. Stay tuned, but don’t go off the rails, crazy trains; a decision has yet to be made, and laying tracks in a tunnel under the Traffic Circle unfortunately seems unlikely.
