Good news — Southern Pines Youth Rugby is looking to expand their #squad, and you’re looking for ways to get your kid to let go of the X Box controller.

The rugby program is looking for kids from across the county to come out and give the sport a chance. No experience is necessary.

In fact, program director and head coach Joe Hogan says most of his players never touched a rugby ball before their first practice. And, those kids won their fall league this year.

Hogan revived the program after moving back to the area three years ago. He originally started it as a sophomore at Pinecrest in 2004.

The sport runs year-round, but their busiest seasons are the winter and spring. The teams, The Jokers and The Jesters, practice on Tuesdays and Thursdays on the Memorial Park fields. Most of their matches are on Saturdays.

The club is hosting a free middle school clinic on Feb. 1 at Memorial Park, and they’re welcoming athletes of all backgrounds and skill levels.

For more information about Southern Pines Youth Rugby, contact Joe Hogan by phone or email at 910-639-2199 or hogan.joew@gmail.com. You can also check out their progress on Facebook.
